Rick’s Café Casablanca is a restaurant, bar and café located in the city of Casablanca, Morocco. Opened March 1, 2004,[1] the place was designed to recreate the bar made famous by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in the movie classic Casablanca. Set in an old courtyard-style mansion built against the walls of the Old Medina of Casablanca, the restaurant – piano bar is filled with architectural and decorative details reminiscent of the film: curved arches, a sculpted bar, balconies, balustrades as well as beaded and stencilled brass lighting and plants that cast luminous shadows on white walls. There is an authentic 1930’s Pleyel piano and As Time Goes By is a common request to the in-house pianist.

Owned by The Usual Suspects company, this Casablanca landmark is usually described as the real Rick’s Café, finally bringing the legendary “Gin Joint” of cinema fame to life in today’s Casablanca.

I say:

Will probably depart Casablanca for Marrakech tomorrow, by train.  Have read and heard it is much less hectic.  At 4 million, CB is more city than I enjoy.

  1. I hesitated to ask you if you were going to see the famous “Rick’s Cafe” because I thought it was pretty naive of me, so I am glad you beat me to it. Sounds very interesting. I am looking forward to hearing some Mediterranean fishing stories, like maybe you hired on as a deck hand on a fishing boat, or you went down to the dock on the bay and caught some flounder with the locals, etc. Sorry to hear that you had to pack all of your treasures with you instead of shipping. I thought that the end of that story would be you greased the right palms and ended up shipping them back, that was the “Egyptian Way”. How long are you planning to stay in Morocco? And then where?     1. So many stories, so many photos, so little time to write and such slow upload speeds. In Alexandria I went for a morning walk along the corniche at 5:30 AM. Fishermen, in small wooden boats were back ashore and were on the beach picking shrimp and small fish from their nets. I stopped and gestured with them and took some great early morning pics while the light was still soft. Showed them the. Pic of the giant halibut on our trip to Homer. They showed me a live 6″ sole they netted.

      Did not write about my second attempt to mail things back home, but the hotel owner at Osiris Hotel took me to the post office to ship my shirts, papayrus prints and other stuff. Never got tracking info, paid $130.00 (real price could have been much less, who knows in Egypt?). Moro is working on my behalf to get the tracking info from the hotel owner. I give it a 50/50 chance the box will make it to Portland.

    1. Yeah!! Now we have substance and some background!! I love it!!

      BTW, Casablanca is only a stones throw from the Atlantic Ocean. Lots of water.

      And from what I saw out the plane window on the way in, it is quite agricultural between the coast and the Atlas Mountains, with many fields and roads. Much more than I imagined. Will find out more about the countryside as I head south tomorrow.
